“For the Village by the Village”
What a day! After more than 60 days without rain, the heavens opened at 8am on Show day, just as our enthusiastic exhibitors began to arrive. It seemed the West End Village Show was destined for another wet year. However, this time the rain was more of a novelty than a nuisance and it certainly did not dampen the spirits of the exhibitors, volunteers or visitors.
We are delighted to report that well over 600 entries were received in the Flower Show marquee. The award-winning quality was outstanding, creating a magnificent display of flowers, vegetables & fruit, photography, cakes, floral art, preserves, handicrafts and, of course, the wonderful entries from our talented children.
The whole marquee looked absolutely stunning and the Committee was particularly pleased to receive such positive feedback from visitors. This was especially impressive given that it had not been the easiest year for our gardens.
Outside, music filled the green throughout the day. Our grateful thanks go to Kingston Hospital Radio and the fantastic Epsom & Ewell Silver Band for providing such enjoyable entertainment.
We were also delighted to welcome a number of new artists and crafters, alongside those familiar exhibitors who return to the Show year after year. Their wonderful range of genuine home-made goods provided plenty of interest. There was a pleasing turnout of commercial stalls with a varied selection of food outlets – it was good to see the Prince of Wales represented; and we were grateful to General Manager, Karen Paxton, for presenting the trophies at the end of the day.
The Committee & volunteer-run sideshows were, as always, extremely popular. The Raffle, Silent Auction, Smash-a-Plate & Save-a-Plate, Coconut Shy and Toy & Book stall all attracted keen participants and customers. It was great to see the introduction of our Sweet stall, ably set up and run by young budding committee members!
Delicious teas and cakes were served in the Village Hall, run by Christ Church (Esher) along with the St George’s Church Cake Sale; both were much appreciated by the hungry visitors and our thanks to them.
The children were kept busy too, with Matto the Clown providing plenty of fun and laughter. Also, the magnificent Dray Horses were here again with rides around the green. Children’s sports saw some keen competitors braving the elements between showers.
Particular highlights at the Show were the ever-popular Dog Show, with some very happy winners, judged by Hersham Hounds, and also the fantastic Classic Car Display. We were grateful to the West End Motor Club members for bringing along their wonderful collection of cars. The arrival of a police car and fire engine was another highlight, particularly favoured by youngsters.
The Committee would like to express its heartfelt thanks to everyone who played a part in making the 2026 Show such a success. Our volunteers were phenomenal, whether helping with the preparations and setting up, assisting on the day, or staying behind to clear everything away. Without their hard work and commitment, there simply would be no Show.
We are equally grateful for the continued support of the residents and friends of West End. Most importantly, we would like to thank Garson Farm, which has supported the West End Village Show for an incredible 72 years. This remarkable longstanding support is hugely appreciated.
The West End Village Show is a community event – “For the Village by the Village” – and 2026 once again demonstrated what can be achieved when everyone comes together.
Profits from the Village Show will be donated to charities and good causes selected after the AGM in November.
We look forward to welcoming you all back next year. The Committee would also love to hear any suggestions or recommendations you may have for future Village Shows. Do email us on: thewestendvillageshow@gmail.com
Save the Date: Saturday 28th August 2027.
